      Director, Japan Country Business and People Partnering


The Director, Japan Country Business and People Partnering drives and leads Japan’s people strategy and initiatives at the country level. This position partners with business leaders on the development of long-term goals to drive the country’s organization and talent strategy, and coaches and develops business leaders. It also maintains strategic alignment between the Global Business and People Partners (GBPPs), Japan Business and People Partners (BPPs), country leadership, and People organizations. It ensures People programs and plans are aligned to businesses priorities and incorporates local relevancy by collaborating with Global People Services and People functions to influence program design and implementation.




Connect people to strategy

  • Uses talent levers to enable and advance the country’s strategic goals
  • Translates the country strategy into a people strategy, and understands implications of one on the other
  • Incorporates local relevancy into People strategies and programs, while ensuring compliance to local regulations
  • Drives Japan People strategies and solutions that deliver business results
  • Partners with People Centers of Excellences to hire, develop, retain, reward, and motivate top talent
  • Facilitates and drives the Diversity, equality and inclusion agenda for Japan in partnership with both business leadership and the functional group
  • Explores opportunities enabled by people within the country
  • Anticipates trends and interprets impact on business and People strategy
  • Acts as the conscience of the country leadership
  • Champions change initiatives, organizational values, and culture

  • Prioritizes high value activities and creates process to reduce low value tasks
  • Navigates locally to influence decisions and actions outside of the GBPP function

  • Connects and explains the correlations between business initiatives and people-driven results


Lead, develop and manage Japan GBPP teams and includes business, functional or country leadership

  • Leads a team of Senior Managers, Managers, and senior level ICs
  • Exercises significant oversight across multiple organizational units and sites
  • Demonstrates broad impact through significant direct and dotted line employee reporting relationships
  • Sets overall program objectives and priorities, allocates financial and human capital for business level support, programs, and projects, ensures timely and effective delivery
  • Has financial responsibility, develops People organization budgets for Japan, optimizes People organization team headcount and overhead costs
  • Within Japan, directs the effectiveness of the People operating model, programs, and service delivery
  • Ensures that GBPP team has the capacity and capabilities that are aligned with business strategy and continually develops their business and People acumen
  • Leads GBPP team to set strategy, drive innovation, develop plans, and resolve critical issues


Other primary responsibilities

  • Connects all People functions within Japan to ensure effective design and delivery of People programs, focusing on speed and relevance of People organization to Japan
  • Aligns People functions to communicate, collaborate, and deliver services and programs to the business
  • Provides dotted line leadership to all People functions within Japan; solid line accountability for site/country BPPs
  • Acts as the final People organization decision maker within Japan—one country leader declaring satisfaction or lack of satisfaction of solutions
  • Creates strong sense of People team cohesiveness and engagement in country/region—owns People team communications and partners with vertical leaders on People organization development
  • Serves as the lead People contact and escalation point in Japan (for both People organization and business leaders)
  • Connects business to the People organization by understanding business needs of all customers in the country, channels feedback to those accountable for design, execution, and delivery within Japan
  • Accountable for empowering Japan relevant delivery solutions where it makes business sense without materially deviating from the initial intent of the program and/or solution
  • Drives alignment and consistency in implementation of People programs across organizations in Japan.
  • Drives country diversity, equality, and inclusion strategy
  • Leads GBPP development within Japan



  • 12-15 years of experience in Country Business and People Partnering with Sr. Level Executives
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, ability to manage performance and develop talent for the future
  • Deep business acumen, understanding of how the industry, our competition and the Company make money
  • Ability to anticipate trends and interpret their impact on business and people strategy
  • Ability to understand data across organizations and determine trends and broader direction
  • Ability to use people levers to enable and advance Company and functional strategies
  • Solid understanding of People functions and programs and how they affect business success
  • Experience in leading high-performing teams
  • Proven track record of coaching and influencing executives for high impact effectiveness and business results
  • Excellent analytical, conceptual, and strategic skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results in a fast-paced environment, resourcefully innovate and adapt in a rapidly changing ambiguous environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to effectively interact with and influence all organizational levels, including the executive level
  • Ability to drive enterprise/cross functional communications and change management
  • Ability to build strong, trusting relationships
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration or related field, advanced degree preferred
