R&D Equipment Development Engineer

An Equipment Development Engineer is an integral member of the Technology Development Engineering team at Micron Technology and enables our development of world class memory and storage technology.  The primary focus of this role is developing cutting edge semiconductor processing hardware – both internally with process engineering and externally with vendors – to enable novel process technology. 

Success is derived through partnership with the process development team and effective project management of vendor resources to achieve process technology and productivity benchmarks.  Equipment Development Engineers use creative experimental techniques and have access to a full suite of semiconductor analytics lab equipment and on-board plasma diagnostics to solve unique technical challenges.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

R&D Process Development

  • Develop and define hardware requirements enabling new processing technology.
  • Drive and manage vendor execution to meet goals and timelines.
  • Provide hardware technical support to the process development staff.
  • Execute and manage characterization program of new tools and identify and close any hardware and procedural gaps.
  • Execute against project milestones - close hardware gaps before transfer to internal customers.
  • Learn the “business” – between R&D/Manufacturing/Procurement – and how to manage those relationships and communication effectively to maximize Micron’s leverage with Suppliers.
  • Be an expert – internally and externally – collaborating on hardware technology roadmaps. 
  • Manage installation and upgrades of tools ensuring quality of work, cost control and adherence to project schedule.
  • Partner with tool vendors developing training program for next generation equipment.
  • Mentor equipment technicians and engineers.
  • Partner with Pilot Line to develop internal quality control (SPC) for new process hardware.
  • Always execute with Safety first behaviors.

  • An electromechanical or hardware derived work history/education
  • Ability to generate data-based problem statements and success criteria.

  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong computer skills, or minimally the ability to learn quickly new programs like JMP and other data analysis programs.



  • MS in engineering discipline or BS + 5 years of related experience
