Product Functional Safety Engineer

This position can sit in San Jose, CA or Boise, Idaho. 


The functional safety of electronic components within automotive applications (ADAS, IVI, Dashboard, and eventually Autonomous Driving) has become a top priority in the automotive industry and a group of IEC61508 standards are required. This exciting position will actively participate with the product development teams to ensure that relevant automotive functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262 for passenger vehicles) are achieved and maintained for Micron’s current and future automotive products.


As an Automotive Functional Safety (FuSa) Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting ISO26262 compliance for Micron products through the right implementation of methodologies, tools, and establishing project planning and resources to support it. You will be involved in new product development and analysis of existing products. You will work with a variety of engineering and product development teams and internal stakeholders to establish and improve the safety culture. This individual will also assist Micron’s marketing and sales organizations to develop an appropriate Functional Safety Go To Market strategy; this will include, but not be limited to, customer visits, web site information, sales collateral material, and training of the sales and field application engineering teams.

What you will tackle:

  • Perform safety management activities according to relevant standards during all project phases (planning, product development, validation, production)
  • Maintain and support product safety planning including project management, deriving product-specific safety plans, and establishing metrics
  • Ensure requirements and specification traceability, completeness and coverage and verification/validation plan improvements
  • Cascade safety requirements from product level to the module/block and unit level to specify detailed safety requirements, including diagnostic and software requirements
  • Support the development of safety architectures and design specifications to meet ISO26262 product metrics
  • Lead or support safety analysis (DFMEA, FMEDA, DFA) to ensure safety targets have been achieved, safety concepts are analyzed, and risks are under control
  • Support and improve configuration and change management plans including use of tools for base-lining and version control across the product lifecycle for safety-related work products
  • Collaborate with project managers, development team as well as external customers and ecosystem enablers on Functional Safety
  • Conduct verification reviews and confirmation reviews of product life cycle work products with product teams to ensure functional safety standards are being met throughout product development cycles
  • Update and implement the product safety manuals.
  • Lead and coordinate the creation of functional safety documentation of processes and procedures according to ISO 26262 to demonstrate safety management requirements and process compliance
  • Support internal functional safety audits and assessments
  • Support evaluating external suppliers in the field of functional safety

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum BS in Engineering, Mathematics/Science
  • 5-10 years of work experience in semiconductor product development (ideally in automotive safety-related products)
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with ISO 26262
  • Knowledge of Functional Safety Theory, with specific on-the-job experience. Preferable to hold Safety Practitioner certifications
  • Experience in Software Quality and process ( e.g., ASPICE)
  • Experience with Products Development Life Cycle (Systems, Software)
  • Knowledge of Requirements Management tools ( e.g., DOORS, JAMA, etc)
  • Experience with establishing or supporting Configuration and Change Management tools
  • Proven record of taking customer requirements from design to production
  • Familiarity with memory product architectures, designs, and verification/validation/test algorithms
  • Good technical leadership, planning and organization/control skill
