Contamination Control Engineer

As a Contamination Control Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include strategic planning and management of instrumentation and systems utilized to ensure integrity of cleanroom, FOUP environment, UPW systems, key bulk chemical delivery systems, and process tool mini-environments. You will be able to apply knowledge of metallic, particulate, and airborne chemical/molecular contamination to maintain wafer and cleanroom integrity to mitigate potential excursions. You can expect to regularly interact with Lab personnel, Production, Engineering, Facilities, and Safety/PHA in order to fulfill various requests and gather critical information. This role will assist with developing processes for FOUP environment analyzer equipment, improve process efficiencies/characterization, and correct/prevent process excursions. Additionally, this role will require the following skills/abilities: project management, data analysis, research, metric development, innovation, and continuous improvement. This position requires a candidate who can thrive whether working independently or as part of team.


Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performing analytical testing using high sensitivity methods like swab sampling, VPD tests, impinger/TD tests, particle analysis, etc
  • Develop and execute strategic projects and generate associated reports
  • Monitor atmospheric and mini-environment contamination levels (particulate, metallic, chemical, etc.)
  • Utilize data mining skills and statistical analysis to generate and maintain statistical process control (SPC) charts
  • Coordinate and perform head-to-head testing of Contamination Control equipment options
  • Perform tool/area contamination troubleshooting to help solve process issues
  • Make decisions/recommendations regarding Contamination Control concerns for TD and global manufacturing sites
  • Testing of new materials for cleanroom compatibility
  • Assess facilities activity and construction taking place in the cleanroom for risk to product
  • Collaborate with various labs onsite i.e. Surface, Analytical lab, Clean Chem Lab, etc
  • Provide back-up support for Contamination Control Shift Technicians when needed
  • ERT response and support as needed
  • Installation, operation, and maintenance of Contamination Control instrumentation



Successful candidates for this position will have:

  • The ability to establish objectives, timelines, and milestones for projects and drive them to ensure that deliverables are completed within the required timeframe
  • Understanding of micro contaminate defects with respect to semiconductor wafer processing
  • Understanding of key Lab capabilities, instrumentation, sensitivities, units of measurements, etc
  • Knowledge of business process improvement methods
  • Proven ability to present technical data to small and large groups
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks concurrently and see them to conclusion on a given timeline
  • An in-depth understanding of cleanroom design i.e. filtration, HVAC/Air Handling, laminar air flow, pressurization, Airborne Molecular Contamination (AMC), EHSS principles, ISO standards, etc
  • Excellent technical and mechanical aptitude using hand tools, obtaining measurements, and utilizing instrumentation
  • Proficient computer knowledge that can be applied to documentation and data analysis using programs including MS Office Products like PowerPoint, Excel, and JMP (or similar statistical programs)
  • Excellent time-management, organization, problem solving skills, work ethic, and self-motivation
  • Great verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact productively with other team members.
  • Work shift flexibility



Minimum of a BS in Engineering, Material Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related field is required.
