R&D Emerging Memory Thin Film Process Development Engineer

As a Senior or Principal Thin Films Process Development Engineer in the Technology Development group at Micron, you will work in industry-leading semiconductor process technology related to new memory devices and technologies. In this position, you will design and optimize deposition processes for metal oxide thin films which are integral part of the memory cell. You will take ideas from conception through process development and implementation of high density memory for commercial success. You will be working alongside Equipment Engineers, Process Development Engineers, Process Integration Engineers, and Characterization Lab Scientists, to focus and accelerate development of next generation technology. You will be responsible for the evaluation of new deposition hardware platforms and process chemistries, fundamental characterization, process development, and generation of intellectual property relevant to the company. As a Senior or Principal Engineer, you will drive the cell films technology roadmap, partner with vendors to develop processes that meet device requirements for future technology nodes, and transfer processes to pilot production and high volume manufacturing facilities.  


Successful candidate for this position will have:

  • Strong understanding of solid state physics including transition metal oxides, metals, surfaces, and interfaces, understanding fundamental challenges in materials exploration for device scaling.
  • An understanding of chemical kinetics and their direct application to CVD and ALD deposition processes in various deposition reactors.
  • Hands on experience on thin films deposition equipment in lab or clean-room environment.
  • An understanding of various types of thin film analysis techniques such as SIMS, XPS, EDS, AFM, SEM, TEM, XRR.
  • An understanding of various thin film electrical evaluation methods and techniques such as capacitance and leakage measurements, dielectric relaxation, tunneling mechanism.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical techniques.
  • The ability to evaluate and make insightful inferences from large amounts of various types of data, such as electrical and physical analysis.
  • The ability to plan and execute effective, well-designed experiments and write clear, concise reports documenting the results.
  • The ability to suggest process alternatives and evaluate different options that may provide improved film properties and higher process margins
  • The ability to be highly motivated, goal oriented and aggressively focus on solving problems both as part of a team and individually.  
  • The ability to manage projects effectively making best use of available resources.
  • The ability to work independently and drive projects with limited supervisory input
  • Demonstrated to be dependable and willing to take responsibility for the development of a process and tool.
  • The ability to work and collaborate with a wide variety of people in different areas of process R&D, process integration, and pilot production to effectively accomplish tasks in a timely manner.
  • The ability to give and take constructive criticism from other team members and to leverage input to drive projects forward.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new skills as needed.


Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar field. 

Must have at least 5 years of experience in thin film process development, with a proven track record of achievement. Experience with High K or other complex oxide films is preferred.
